Places I visited in October:

1. HA GIANG

Ha Giang is probably on of the most beautiful mountain provinces in the northern Vietnam.

Autumn, especially October is the best time for traveling in this province. October is the month when it witnesses the end of the wet season in Ha Giang, Vietnam. The month is now ready to experience the fall in the temperature which makes the climate quite relaxing and a soothing one.

Especially, from October to December, Ha Giang Mountains wear one of their most beautiful dresses color. The province, famous for its geological park and breathtaking mountain scenery, is covered in buckwheat flowers.

2. HANOI

October marks the beginning of autumn- the most beautiful season in Vietnam.

This is the time when summer-time heat, humidity and heavy showers have disappeared; cool dry days make this month one of the best times to explore Hanoi’s maze-like streets and colonial buildings.

Compare to September, October’s weather is even milder since its temperature is getting more favored. Autumn and its beauty haven’t faded a bit while cooling wind blow frequently to satisfy people.

Especially at night, when you walk along Hanoi’s streets and besides its lakes, you will breathe in the beautifully sweet fragrance of milky flowers. Milky flowers are a symbol of Hanoi’s autumn. There are many songs and poems that mention their charming fragrance.

3. SAPA

October is the best time to visit SAPA because of its striking mountainous landscapes.

Every scene in Sapa is appeared as a wonderful masterpiece of the natures, making us never get tired of looking at.

Atmosphere, temperature and humidity in October are great to explore Sapa. It is a bit chilly, not too much sunny, and dry. You can visit all of best sightseeings in Sapa and bring home very beautiful pictures.

October is also the harvesting season in Sapa. At that time, Sapa beauty is at its prime. You will see a breathtaking landscape of the golden lush terraced fields, which run along mountains and are highlighted by green forests, have become popular postcard pictures.

4. HALONG BAY

Legends has it that one upon a time, the God sent a family of dragons to protect a bay from invaders and you can see the unique shape of the two thousand plus islands surrounding this magical city resembles the bodies of these mythical creatures.

You would never see anything this amazing in life and I definitely recommend you adding this destination to your bucket list.

Unlike summer with unpredictable weather, Ha Long Bay in October is a different story. It offers some of the best chances of clear skies.

One of the activities is on a cruise ship to little fishing village. It is so fascinating to see how different people lived there. One of the ways locals make money is the paddle you around their turf and showed us the magic of their home. They will take you to these amazing caves. And everything was just so dreamy like a haunting scene from a romantic movie.

The best places to go shopping in Hanoi are mostly traditional markets and narrow shophouses, but there’s a growing number of independent boutiques and shopping malls offering a wide range of international brands, as well as dining and entertainment options. The best thing about shopping in Hanoi is that you can do it all on foot, with many streets dedicated to specific trades.

This is particularly true in the Old Quarter, where Silk Street and Silver Street still retain their particular trades after hundreds of years. Whether you are looking for gimmicky souvenirs such as Vietnamese farming hats or a hand-made silk evening gown, we have compiled a list of great places to shop in Hanoi.

1. Hang Gai Street (Silk Street)

Hang Gai Street is a great place to pick up some high quality, fashionable silk items in Hanoi. Also known as Silk Street, the entirety of this busy 300 metre-long street is lined with fashion boutiques and tailors, as well as stores specialising in home furnishing.

Famous brands on Hang Gai Street include the colourful Tan My Design, offering ready-to-wear pieces. Squeezed in between the high profile boutiques are some excellent art galleries and narrow souvenir shops selling far cheaper items.

The Hanoi Weekend Night Market is a busy, bustling gathering of stalls and vendors that brings crowds in droves. Taking place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7 pm, the market runs through the Old Quarter, starting from Hang Dao Street and running north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market.

The fashion items on sale may not turn many heads, but many come to the market to enjoy its fun environment and street food. The vendors have plenty of interesting and exotic things for you to try. Bartering is normal, even encouraged here.

Dong Xuan Market has a wide array of products for sale over 4 floors. Located on the northern edge of the Old Quarter, it is an imposing Soviet-style building, surrounded on all sides by merchant shops and stalls.

Dong Xuan Market is a rough-and-ready type of market, especially on the ground floor. Head upstairs and you will find printed tees, bolts of fabric, school uniforms, luggage stalls and much more, all available at wholesale prices. It is quite an experience, even if you only leave with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat.

Hang Bac Street has been synonymous with jewellery (bac means silver in Vietnamese) for hundreds of years. This small yet atmospheric street still retains many small outlets of jewellers selling rings, necklaces and many types of inexpensive fashion pieces.

There isn’t a particular shop to check out – instead, take a wander from one end to the other and check out the many jewellers, handicrafts and propaganda poster shops along the street. To reach Hang Bac Street, start from the Water Puppet Theatre on the northern side of Hoan Kiem Lake and walk up Hang Be Street until you come to a T-junction.

Nha Tho Street is packed with small fashion stores and excellent restaurants – despite only measuring 110 metres. Located in front of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, it is very popular with the sophisticated set of Hanoi’s middle-class and expat community.

You can find independent boutiques selling Vietnamese-style fashion in western sizes, handmade jewellery and accessories at reasonable prices.

Hang Da Market occupies a modern and air-conditioned building on the western edge of the Hanoi Old Quarter. It has a collection of stalls selling clothes, shoes, bags and accessories. Prices are relatively affordable, and it’s possible to haggle, especially if you are buying in bulk.

On most weekdays, Hang Da Market is quite empty as most of the customers are Vietnamese. Visit on a weekend to enjoy more of a pulse to this sizeable shopping space. The complex is close to Ba Dinh Square and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Hang Dau Street is quite unbelievable at first glance because of the sheer amount of shops selling 1 thing: shoes. There are hundreds of shoe-sellers lining the street, making it a great place to shop around for a nice pair of shoes or sandals in Hanoi.

Most of the footwear consists of brand names made at Vietnamese factories that have been rejected as seconds, making them a great purchase with usually only a small imperfection.

Thanh Binh Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery in the French Quarter of Hanoi. It’s surrounded by 5-star hotels, fine-dining restaurants, and the Hanoi Stock Exchange.

Some of Vietnam’s most respected modern artists have pieces hanging in Thanh Binh Gallery. The range of lacquerware painting is especially good here. Pieces often sell to private collections and public institutions, so you can be assured of the quality of artworks in this gallery.

Summary of Current Situation:

Following an announcement on 16 March, 2022, Vietnam has fully reopened for tourism. Perhaps even bigger news: there is no testing on arrival. The only requirements at the moment are a PCR test 72 hours or a rapid test 24 hours before departure. As soon as it is established that guests are COVID negative, they are free to explore Vietnam.

In the official news release, there is no mention of a need to show proof of COVID vaccination. What is clear is that fully vaccinated travellers will be eligible for entry. Whether unvaccinated travellers are eligible for entry will be clarified at a later date.

Furthermore, Vietnam has announced the resumption of visa-free entry for up to 15 days for citizens of 13 countries and e-visas for citizens of 80 countries (below).

I love the chaos here. It’s a city with a billion things happening at once. Motorbikes, bicycles, cars, and rickshaws go wherever and whenever they please, and lots of street stands and market spill into the traffic lanes.

The city has a lot to offer: wonderful shops, fantastic nightlife, and delicious food. After Hoi An, it is my second favorite city in Vietnam.

Additionally, you’ll find some interesting (and propagandaish museums like the War Remnants Museum and the Cu Chi Tunnels.

This travel guide to Ho Chi Minh will give you the best places to visit.

1. Get lost in Chinatown

Chinatown is a hive of activity and a maze of temples, restaurants, jade ornaments, and medicine shops. Aside from the sprawling Binh Tay Market, you’ll find some fascinating temples in the area including the Chinese Chua Quan Am Temple and Cha Tam, a Catholic cathedral.

2. Admire the Notre Dame Cathedral

The Notre Dame Cathedral is an imposing red brick building built between 1877 and 1883. The two towers in the front of the cathedral rise above visitors at nearly 58 meters tall while the neon-lit statue of the Virgin Mary is also an intriguing sight.

3. See the Emperor Jade Pagoda

This temple was built in 1909 to honor the supreme Taoist god, Emperor Jade. It’s one of the most impressive pagodas in Vietnam. The building is filled with intricate woodcarvings and statues of divinities and heroes, including Emperor Jade himself. The roof is also covered in detailed tile work showing characters from Buddhist and Taoist legends.

4. Shop at the Ben Thanh Market

Though this market in District 1 is crowded and rife with pickpockets, it is the ideal place to pick up some handicrafts or bargain souvenirs, or to try some traditional (and inexpensive) Vietnamese food. It’s the largest market in Vietnam, so get lost in the chaos and enjoy it all.

5. Escape to Can Gio Island

The Can Gio Island is popular with tourists and locals looking to escape the chaos of the city. The beaches here aren’t mind-blowing like they are in Thailand but it’s a cool place to relax and one of Vietnam’s better islands. The island’s monkey sanctuary and mangroves are great for wildlife fans. It’s about a two-hour drive to get there and you can take the #75 bus from 23/9 Park.

6. Unwind in Twenty-Three September Park

In the early morning and just after the work day is done, this park is packed with people exercising and playing games. Watch a Tai Chi class, play a game of badminton, or chat with one of the many students who hang out in the area.

7. Visit Ba Thien Hau Temple

Located in Chinatown, the Ba Thien Hau Temple is a Buddhist temple that was built in 1706 for the Chinese sea goddess, Mazu. It’s believed she flies around on a cloud or a mat, rescuing people at sea. The outside of the temple doesn’t look like much but the inside is filled with porcelain figures, and the roof is covered in colorful dioramas.

8. Take a cooking class

There are many, many cooking classes in Ho Chi Minh City. You can easily shop around. I recommend Saigon Cooking Class by Hoa Tuc because it is led by chefs that love combining classic and contemporary Vietnamese dishes. You can even combine your cooking class with a market tour. Tours here start from 909,000 VND ($39.50 USD), but you can find them for cheaper elsewhere.

9. Take a food tour

If you would rather not get hands on with your food, take a tour through Ho Chi Minh’s best foodie neighborhoods. With Street Food Adventure Tours you will safely try lots of street food, including everything from rice vermicelli with BBQ pork to coconut juice and Vietnamese coffee (and more!). Tours are typically around 27 USD. Tour details

10. Catch a show at the Opera House

The Opera House in Ho Chi Minh City is one of the best-preserved examples of French colonial architecture in the country. It was built in 1897 for the opera but now also hosts lots of different performances, including ballet and Vietnamese traditional dances and plays. Check the website to see what’s on during your visit.

You can check off the city’s signature sights, feast on street food, take a cooking course, explore the Cu Chi Tunnels and the countryside around them, cruise the Mekong Delta, and discover a uniquely Vietnamese religion: Cao Dai. Here’s how.

Day 1: Streets and Eats

Spend your first day exploring Ho Chi Minh City and feasting on Vietnamese fare. Start with a cooking class that includes a market tour: Soak up the sights and scents of a traditional produce market, then prepare a multi course lunch. Replete, head out on a tour of the city’s signature sights, including contemporary landmarks such as Reunification Palace and colonial-era gems such as the Central Post Office. As night falls, extend your Vietnamese food adventures with a street food tour of the heart of the city, traveling by foot or scooter.
Day 2: Tunnels and Temples

On your second day in Ho Chi Minh City, delve deep into the era of the Vietnam War—or, as the Vietnamese call it, the American War. Start with a trip to the War Remnants Museum, where moving displays tell the tale of this tragic conflict. Then travel through the countryside to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a war-era underground maze of narrow, low tunnels where Vietnamese freedom fighters lived, fought, and died. Consider a speedboat tour that brings you into the unspoiled countryside around the tunnels, or make a stop at the Cao Dai Temple, Vietnam’s homegrown Vatican. Wrap up the day with a dinner cruise along the Saigon River.

Day 3: Watery Wonders

Devote your third day in Ho Chi Minh City to discovering the Mekong Delta and its palm-fringed canals, slender waterways, and tropical orchards. Some cruises include a stop at one of the delta’s photogenic floating markets; others offer visits to islands where you can cycle through the countryside. Alternatively, for a different perspective on the river, explore the mangrove swamps of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve. Back in the city, catch an early dinner at a modern Vietnamese restaurant before discovering the nation’s answer to Cirque du Soleil: the magical A O Show. Cocktails in a rooftop bar make the perfect farewell to the city.

Morning: Saigon Sights

Start your day in Ho Chi Minh City by getting a handle on some of the city’s signature sights, from French colonial relics such as the Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral to contemporary landmarks such as Reunification Palace. Shoppers won’t want to miss bustling Ben Thanh Market, where stalls are piled high with everything from Vietnamese herbs to colorful souvenirs. History buffs should head straight to the excellent War Remnants Museum, with relics, weaponry, and informative displays on the war against the Americans that shaped the country for many decades. Consider a ride on a classic cyclo (pedal rickshaw) : SAIGON CYCLO TOUR

Afternoon: Tunnel Vision

Spend the afternoon exploring farther afield, on a trip to the notorious Cu Chi Tunnels, a tunnel network dug deep into the ground by freedom fighters during the Vietnam War. Learn about the war through an informative film, then descend into the narrow, cramped tunnels with their camouflaged entrances and see rooms that were once kitchens and even hospitals. Travel by speedboat for insights into life along the Saigon River and classic photo opportunities, or by minivan for a more wallet-friendly experience. Many tour packages include a Vietnamese lunch on-site.

Night: Feeding Frenzy

Spend the evening discovering the city’s street-food secrets with a guide. Some tours operate on foot, while others let you travel like a local on the back of a scooter through the neon and glitter of the city by night. Wrap up the evening with a freshly brewed draught beer at one of Vietnam’s trademark bia hoi bars.

Just like the diversity of its landscapes, Vietnam offers a variety of ways to get around. You may favour windswept motorbike rides, fly straight from point to point, or take the overland routes of trains and buses, soaking in the sights along the way.

With a little planning (and an adventurous spirit), you can usually get where you want to go easily and comfortably. Within the cities there are plenty of taxis, buses, and cyclos; and out in the countryside, cycling is often an appealing option. Below is an overview of your transport options within Vietnam

Flights in Vietnam

For those short on time, flying is the most convenient way to see several destinations within Vietnam. Many travellers underestimate the distance (and state of the roads) between cities and opt for buses or trains instead of flying. It’s good to note that train rides from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City can run up to 30 hours, and from Central Vietnam to either point, 16 hours is quite common. In light of this, it makes a lot of sense to opt for a one- or two-hour plane ride and spend more time in your destination. Prices for domestic tickets are surprisingly reasonable, and there are daily flights to all of the country’s top destinations.

Vietnam Airlines is the national carrier and has the most flights daily, while Vietjet and Jetstar both offer affordable deals for short hops around the country.

Trains in Vietnam

Averaging about 40km an hour, Vietnam’s trains are an insightful and relaxing way to journey through the country. The North and South are connected by a single, 2,600km-track network managed by Vietnam Railways. The track snakes through the country from Ho Chi Minh City all the way to the Chinese border. Spring for the soft seats and four-berth cabins for a little extra comfort, or splurge on one of the private tourist sleeping cars that are now available for several key routes. The railroad line is undergoing renovations as much of the existing tracks date back to colonial times, so be sure to research before you go.

Hanoi Train Station Address: 120 Lê Duẩn, Cửa Nam, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City Train Station Address: 1 Nguyễn Thông, phường 9, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

Buying train tickets in Vietnam

You can buy your train tickets at counters in Vietnam’s train stations days or months in advance of your trip, depending on the route. Train tickets are also sold through many travel agencies and online through Vietnam’s official train ticketing website.

Children above 5 years old are charged the full ticket price.

All trains have western and squat toilets on both ends of every carriage.

Luggage transport and freight forward service is available on Reunification Express Trains (see below.)

If you’re traveling during Vietnamese holidays and peak times, be sure to book your train tickets well in advance. On ordinary days it’s still a good idea to buy your tickets a few days early. If you’re trying to buy tickets for same-day travel, you can expect the faster trains and best seats to be taken.

The Reunification Express

The Reunification Express isn’t really a train. It’s a line connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, completed by the French in 1936. The 36-hour scenic ride makes stops in Hue, Danang, Nha Trang, and Phan Thiet. A slow but memorable journey, five Reunification Express services run daily (7:30PM; 10PM; 6AM; 9AM; 1:10PM) from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. There are four classes to choose from: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper, and soft sleeper. The cabins are divided into four berths with simple bedding provided.

Buses in Vietnam

Open-tour buses are an increasingly popular service for budget travelers, especially in Vietnam’s southern and central regions. Buses run regularly and reliably between top destinations such as Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Mui Ne, and Ho Chi Minh City. Most open tour buses are sleeper buses, or have deep reclining chairs. A simple Google search will bring up the most reputed open-tour bus companies. We recommend booking one or two days ahead, unless you’re travelling on a Vietnamese holiday: then you’ll want to book seats at least two weeks in advance.

Motorbikes in Vietnam

Vietnam’s quintessential mode of transport, motorbikes are the most convenient way to travel short distances. Independent travellers may like to try long-distance motorbiking for the adventure and spectacular views. Novice motorists should be careful on Vietnam’s streets and observe the local style of driving, which is more ebb and flow than ‘follow the rules’. You’ll find motorbike rental shops in almost every city. Prices depend on the quality of the bike, ranging from 150,000 to 300,000 VND/day for scooters and mopeds. You can expect to leave a deposit or your passport if you’re renting for more than a week. When in Vietnam, never park your motorbike unattended, always wear a helmet, and be sure to check the ticket number if you leave it in a parking lot.

Cycling in Vietnam

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just enjoy a little pedal now and then, Vietnam will reawaken your love for this mode of transport. Although it’s possible to cycle in the cities, Vietnam’s small towns and beach destinations are perfect for two-wheeled excursions. Some of the country’s best guided tours are in fact bicycle tours. You’ll find these in the Mekong Delta and in Central Vietnam. In towns such as Hoi An and Hue, it’s possible to get to almost everywhere you want to go by bicycle (many of the locals do.) Rentals are usually about 20,000 to 30,000 VND per day (about 1$.)
